I remember working out the way I knew how (bodybuilding), and watching other people around me starting to do these strange things….. box jumps, funny pull ups, etc. I must admit I didn’t think much of it, just something I didn’t want to try. When I met my wife (Paula Szaroz) she was starting to really get into the functional movement side of fitness. She introduced me to this style of working out and it fit in with some of the other training I had done in the past being involved in sports. But I still always turned to traditional body building when it came to weights, it was just easier. Then everything changed when Paula found Crossfit. She showed me this web site and it was instant love for her, for me it took a little more convincing. But I still remember the first workout I did and of course it killed me….. damn you “Linda”. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 of cleans at ¼ body weight, body weight bench press, and deadlifting 1.5 body weight seemed pretty easy for someone who did these exercises almost all the time as part of my body building routine. Well an hour later I felt like crap, felt defeated, and worst of all Paula was right I wasn’t really in shape at all. I think the next day or shortly after I did another “ CrossFit New Girls” workout and that was pretty much it. Even for as bad as it sucked, working out became fun again and there was something new to chase after. Whether it was getting stronger, getting faster, losing weight, putting on weight, feeling better, I was hooked too. Other things started to fall in to place too such as nutrition. CrossFit really opened up my eyes to the world of being a healthier person and a better person.
Over the years I have taken a couple of the CrossFit Certifications and definitely hope to do a few more. Competitions are another thing that I have been able to do and this is the aspect I actually enjoy the most. I have also had the chance to be a judge at the 2013 Western Canada Regionals of the CrossFit Games. I have also met many amazing people, made some good friends, and been to quite a few different gyms to experience the other communities in the CrossFit world. I’m always amazed when I see these other communities and realize how similar it is to ours at Crossfit Pincher Creek. No matter the fitness levels or the back grounds of these people, its always a bunch of people helping each other out to reach a common goal, to be better. This is the real reason why Crossfit is successful. It works why? Because there is support if your not in the best of shape. Because there are goals to achieve. Because there are others to compete against. Because no matter what, you are in the trenches with these people as friends and family fighting to be better and live a healthier life. Community. Well I got many more goals to achieve and typing this is getting me thinking of the things I need to work on hahaha. Paula programmed a chipper today that is gonna really challenge my fitness so gotta go, Hope to see you there.
